Using mentions in AI queries

Reference specific products, collections, pages, and articles in your AI requests for precise results

Last updated: Nov 26, 2025

Mentions allow you to reference specific products, collections, pages, or articles in your AI queries, giving you precise, targeted results for individual items in your catalog.

What are mentions

When you type the @ symbol in any AI input field, you can search and select specific items from your connected platforms. The AI will then work with those exact items instead of your entire catalog.

Example: Instead of asking "Optimize product descriptions," you can ask "Optimize the description for @ChristmasTree" and select the specific product you want to improve.

Where you can use mentions

Mentions work in all AI input areas:

  • Ask Anything AI assistant
  • AI Command Palette (Cmd/Ctrl + K)
  • Quick Action Search on your dashboard
  • Agent execution forms
  • Workflow creation

Any time you see an AI input field, you can use mentions to be more specific about what you want to work with.

How to use mentions

Step 1: Type the @ symbol

When you type @ in any AI input field, a dropdown appears showing your products, collections, pages, and articles.

Step 2: Start typing to search

The list filters as you type, making it easy to find specific items:

  • Type product names: "@christmas" shows all Christmas-related products
  • Type collection names: "@summer" shows summer collections
  • Type page titles: "@about" finds your About page
  • Type article titles: "@guide" finds guides and tutorials
Step 3: Select the item

Click on the item you want to reference or use arrow keys and Enter to select it. The mention appears as a blue pill showing the item name.

Step 4: Continue your query

You can mention multiple items in a single query and add regular text around them.

Example queries with mentions

Single product optimization:

"Generate an SEO-optimized meta description for @[36-Inch Bathroom Mirror]"

Multiple products:

"Create consistent descriptions for @[Christmas Tree A], @[Christmas Tree B], and @[Christmas Tree C] that highlight their unique features"

Collections:

"Analyze the SEO performance of @[Summer Collection] and suggest improvements"

Blog articles:

"Update @[Holiday Shopping Guide] with current trends and optimize for featured snippets"

Static pages:

"Improve the conversion rate of @[About Us] page by making the copy more compelling"

Mixed references:

"Create a blog post about @[Organic Cotton T-Shirt] and link it to @[Sustainability Collection]"

Benefits of using mentions

Precision - Work with exact items instead of asking the AI to guess which ones you mean. Efficiency - Skip the step of copying and pasting product IDs or names. Clarity - Make your intent crystal clear to the AI. Validation - The system verifies the items exist and are accessible, preventing errors. Batch operations - Mention multiple items to optimize, analyze, or update them together.

What happens behind the scenes

When you mention an item, ConvertMate automatically:

  1. Retrieves the complete item details (title, description, metadata, images)
  2. Passes this information to the AI with full context
  3. Ensures the AI works with the exact item you specified
  4. Validates that you have access to modify that item

This gives the AI accurate, up-to-date information about your specific items rather than general instructions.

Mention formatting

Mentions are stored in a special format: @Item Name

Example: @Premium Headphones

You don't need to worry about this format - it's handled automatically when you select items from the dropdown. Just type @ and select what you need.

Finding items to mention

By name: Start typing any part of the product, collection, page, or article name. Recent items: The dropdown shows your most recently updated items first. Full catalog: All items from your connected platforms are available to mention. Real-time search: The list updates instantly as you type.

If you can't find an item, make sure:

  • The platform is properly connected (Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, or Adobe Commerce)
  • The item is published and active on your platform
  • Your platform data has been recently synced

Mentions vs. general queries

Without mentions (general):

"Optimize product descriptions for Christmas trees"

  • AI will search your catalog for Christmas tree products
  • Results may include items you didn't intend
  • Less precise targeting
With mentions (specific):

"Optimize descriptions for @[6FT Christmas Tree] and @[7FT Christmas Tree]"

  • AI works with exactly those two products
  • No guessing or searching required
  • Guaranteed accurate targeting

Use general queries when you want the AI to find items automatically. Use mentions when you know exactly which items you want to work with.

Mentions in workflows

When creating automated workflows, mentions help you:

Target specific items: Schedule weekly updates for your bestselling products by mentioning them. Group operations: Mention all items in a campaign to optimize them together. Consistent updates: Ensure the same items are updated each time the workflow runs. Precise automation: Remove ambiguity from automated tasks.

Common use cases

Product launch preparation:

"Review SEO readiness for @[New Product A], @[New Product B], and @[New Product C] before launch"

Seasonal updates:

"Update @[Holiday Collection] with 2025 trends and refresh all product descriptions"

Performance improvement:

"Analyze why @[Best Selling Widget] has high views but low conversions and suggest improvements"

Content creation:

"Write a comparison blog post between @[Premium Plan] and @[Business Plan]"

A/B testing preparation:

"Create two different meta descriptions for @[Landing Page] to test which performs better"

Competitor research:

"Analyze @[Product Category Collection] and suggest how to differentiate from competitors"

Troubleshooting

Dropdown doesn't appear when typing @

Wait a moment for data to load. If it still doesn't appear, refresh the page and try again.

Can't find a specific item
  • Check that the platform is connected and synced
  • Verify the item is published and active
  • Try typing just part of the name
  • Check for typos in your search
Mention appears as plain text

Click the item in the dropdown to properly insert it. Manually typing @[name] won't work - you must select from the dropdown.

Error: "Entity no longer exists"

The item was deleted or unpublished on your platform. Remove the mention and select a different item.

Privacy and data access

What mentions can access:
  • Items from your connected platforms only
  • Published and active items
  • Items your account has permission to view and edit
What mentions cannot access:
  • Items from platforms you haven't connected
  • Deleted or archived items
  • Items from other users' accounts
  • Draft items not yet published

Tips for effective mention use

Be specific: Mention exact items rather than describing them in text. Use multiple mentions: Reference several related items in a single query for batch operations. Combine with context: Add details around mentions: "For holiday shoppers, optimize @[Gift Set] to emphasize fast shipping" Verify selections: Double-check you've selected the right items before submitting. Save time on repeated tasks: Mention items instead of describing them each time.
